The 2011 Sandy Beach Pro/Am is just around the corner. With summer swells heating up the waters of Hawaii both locals and traveling competitors are excited for another great year at the Sandy Beach Pro. This year competitors from across the nation will be attending the 26th year of the Sandy Beach Pro.

Sandy Beach located on the southeast shore of Oahu, is the home of the modern day Bodyboard. It is where the sport began to take shape in it’s thumping shore break on into it’s shallow reef at Half point. Athletes such as Mike Stewart 10x World Champion and Ben Severson former World Champion all honed their skills at Sandy’s small patch of reef name Half Point. Some of current best athletes in our sport such as Jeff Hubbard 2x World Champion, still today use Sandy Beach as their daily training grounds.

A new generation in the form of Trevor Kam has taken over the reigns at Sandy’s and showed his true form making it to the finals of the 2010 event.

The future looks bright for the Sandy Beach Pro/Am and Sandy’s even flowing river of talent. However hope spoilers such as 2010 event winner Guilherme Tamega will be in attendance to give the locals a run for their money.

EVENT UPDATES: JENKS PRO MEN’S DIVISION GOES OFF-WAVES AND RIDERS!

To all media and riders:

Jeff Hubbard (Kauai, Hawaii/Current World Champ) swept the SCION Jenks Pro and the US National title for the second year in a row by narrowly beating Oahu, Hawaii’s JB Hillen. They two were followed up by Guilherme Tamega (Brazil/x6 World Champ) and Matt Holtzman (Kauai) who was competing in the Pro division as an Amateur. JB Hillen was the next best thing in the line up next to Jeff Hubbard with huge air roll spins and great barrels. Jeff’s wave knowledge and big moves edged him above the field however. Title contender Guilhereme Tamega had a good chance to take out Jeff but could not get the 8.86 score he needed to win the US title by placing second in the SCION Jenks Pro.

Jeff Hubbard is currently in the lead with 1720
Guilherme Tamega and Jacob Romero have both 1610
Spencer Skipper and Dave Hubbard both have both 1130

That means:
-If Guilherme or Jacob wins there is no chance for Jeff Hubbard to win the title
-if Jeff looses in the semi finals, TAMEGA or ROMERO need at least a 3rd
-if Jeff gets a 4th, GT or ROMERO need at least a 2nd
-if Jeff gets a 3rd, GT or ROMERO need to win
-if Jeff or GT go to semi there is no chance for SKIPPER

Trevor Kam has also secured his first ever Open Amateur National title.

The 13-18 Amateur divisions is being dominated by JB Hilen, however there is still room for Shabaz Soaia to over take him if JB goes down in the first round at Jenks.

Amazing things are in store for this year’s event. Some of the helpful features that have been added to help traveling pros include transportation for all riders, hospitality and VIP lounges and sports massage and chiropractic throughout the event. We’re thrilled to host the flagship event that started the entire USBA tour: The SCION Jenk’s Pro.

The final event on this year’s Body Glove USBA National Tour is just around the corner and the excitement for the 2010 SCION Jenk’s Pro has been building to a fever pitch. Forecasters are calling for one of the most active Atlantic hurricane seasons in recent history. The SCION Jenks Pro has been blessed with surf for seven years now, including the truly epic 6 – 10′ Ernesto swell of 2005 which provided what many say were the best contest surf for a mainland contest, ever. Even all-time great Jeff Hubbard loves the venue saying, “I can not believe how good the surf has been at Jenk’s over the past years.” We don’t want to jinx it here at the USBA, but we agree with Hubb and hope this year tops them all.

Along with the heat brewing in the Atlantic, there is also heat brewing for the USBA Open Men’s Pro Title. Below you will find the title scenarios that are still open, heading into Jenks.

The 2010 Body Glove USBA Tour moves next to The Dave and Busters Sandy Beach Pro on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. With over twenty years of history the Sandy Beach Pro is ready to move into a new era. The beach that jumped started the sport of Professional Bodyboarding has continued to produce top notch talent.

Just coming off a win at the US Open in the Open Amateur division Oahu’s Trevor “Bu La “ Kam is looking to step it up in and make a run in the Pro division while still competing as an amateur. Jacob Romero (Maui) is coming off his first USBA tour win ever at the US Open and is looking to build momentum off this win with a good shot at taking down six time USBA tour winner Jeff Hubbard (Kauai). JB Hillen of (Waianae, Oahu) is coming off a huge win in the 13-17 at the US Open ready to take on the nations best once again. David Hubbard’s Drop Knee dominance in California will be challenged once again at Sandys with a huge talent pool, which is responsible for his progression year after year. Dave’s close friend from Kauai Bud Miyamato will be the first one in line to de thrown Dave’s 2009 title Sandy Beach Pro DK title.

From the main land we will see top contenders arrive on Oahu in the coming weeks. Names such as Maryland’s Brian Stoehr (current US Drop Knee Champion) and California’s top USBA contender Jeremy Wright will be on hand for the event. Also now living in Hawaii but originally from California Wally Sani will be a name to watch in the Drop Knee Pro division. The stage is set and the talent pool aplenty. Only time will tell who will be The 2010 Dave & Buster’s Sandy Beach Pro Champion.

Check in for competitors will be on Friday the 9th at Dave and Busters of Honolulu from 6pm – 8:pm

On Sunday June 6th, Matt Hamilton suffered from a stroke while surfing in his Pro Dropknee semi final of the USBA Huntington Beach Event. He was pulled from the water and taken to Hoag Hospital. There he underwent a six and half hour surgery to clear the blood clot that had taken over the left side of his brain, which had left him completely paralyzed on that side. The removal of the clot was a success and Matt was moved to Hoag’s ICU department. Matt is being taken care of by the same Dr that performed surgery on Alternative Surf’s Ron Ziebell. In fact Matt was oddly enough admitted to the same room as Ron. Needless to say he is in the best hands capable. Matt’s significant other Jessica Eldrige, has been by his side 24-7 to support and let him know that all his friends and family are there and praying for a quick recovery. Matt’s skill and love for the sport of bodyboarding will be highly missed while he begins to walk down his long road to recovery. Matt has been an incredible person and father ever since the birth of his son Cody and with Jessica and her daughter Grace whom Matt calls his own daughter, they pray for any one and every one who is listening to help in any way possible. With Matt in the hospital and out of work there is no means of income to pay for the rent on their Dana Point apartment. The registration on their vehicle has just expired and the car needs to be smog checked, in order to get the new tags so Jess can drive to and from the places she needs. Those are just a few examples of problems to be encountered (other than Matt’s obvious injury) that the Hamilton/Eldrige family could use your grateful donations for. Matt’s Mom and Sister (Patty & Crystal) have been available to take care of Cody so that he doesn’t have to endure the germ-infested surroundings the hospital has to offer, for too long. It has only been three days since this unbelievable event begun and it has taken a hard toll on all that are close to Matt.

I have known Matt and Jess for a long time and feel so grateful to know and be a part of their lives. That is why I have took it upon myself to take care of anything and everything possible, to ensure that the road to recovery is as smooth as possible for Matt and his family. With this website I will be able to communicate to all those that care and want to be a part of the action but can’t make it in person. I will post daily updates of his condition as well as his family’s. I encourage anyone and everyone to pray and to let the entire bodyboarding community know of Matt’s unfortunate event. Matt is one of my closet friends and I would give my life for him if needed. Please feel free to leave comments, kind remarks, prayers, jokes, words of wisdom, or any thoughts you want to convey to Matt and his family. There is the Donate link at the top of the page, for all those who are kind enough to share for Matt’s cause. I will be constantly monitoring all emails and donations to make sure everyone who shares their kindness is well acknowledged, appreciated, and thanked with the most sincerity possible. If you have any suggestions, comments, or add-ons for Matt’s web page please email me at the info provided under the contact link above. Thank you all so very much and cant wait for Matt’s full recovery day.

BEST WISHES TO ALL, THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT

-Alex Gero

Alex and I created a website to collect funds and to update all friends and family on his recovery.
All generous gifts help, thank you. www.chewyham.com

June 6, 2010

Tour: The Body Glove USBA National Bodyboard Tour

Event: The Sport Chalet US Open of Bodyboarding

Sponsors: Sport Chalet, Body Glove, Ocean Current, Hawaiian Tropic, & Churchill

Location: Huntington Beach Pier

Date: 4th-6th of June

A beautiful final day for Bodyboarding went down on Day 4 at The US Open of Bodyboarding in Huntington Beach, presented by Sport Chalet. Competition began with multiple heats for the 13-18 Semi Finals and Finals. Trevor Kam, JB Hillen, Shawbaz Soaia and Rocket Klein are the new generation of bodyboarders, whom showed a fierce competitiveness in the water today.

The sun greeted us with the sun and the south swell started to pulse 3-4 waves through the pier, for the Open Amateur Semis and Finals. Standouts were Trevor Kam, Jesse Walsh, Rocket Klein, and Hunter Fedden. Rocket Klein, the youngest competitor in the amateur division represented the US well, as he charged it hard today in the water.

Next up, keeping the flow riding going in Drop Knee Semis and Finals were riders such as, David Hubbard, Bud Miyamoto, Matt Hamilton, Chris Won, Nick Ashby, Jeff Vycital, Micah McMullin, and Jesse Walsh. The DK Pro Final, which brought David Hubbard, and Bud Miyamoto dominating the heat with Micha McMullin, and Jeff Vycital not finding the right waves to make it into the top two positions.

The beautiful ladies of the Bodyboarding world graced us with their talent in the Semis, Quarters and Finals today. The sun and waves were strong for the Finals, giving the crowd a good show to watch. Karla Costa Taylor, Tara Parsons, Vickie Reale, and Claudia Ferrari all went their hardest out in the water. Karla came out on top ripping consistently on each wave taken.

The Men’s Pro Quarters, Semis and Finals were exciting to watch throughout the day, as all the guys kept the action going! Wave riders from all over the globe, such as Guilherme Tamega, David Hubbard, Nick Ormerod, Joe Grodzen, Jones Russell, Wesley Fisher, Jacob Romero, Jeff Hubbard, Dan Worley, and David Philips are just some talent whom were representing their countries in the water today.

The Men’s Pro Final provided the riders with a spitting south swell and good ramps. It was the Kauai rippers Jeff Hubbard, David Phillips, and David Hubbard battling against Maui charger Jacob Romero. They were all going hard with style, and giving the judges a reason to pay attention to the water. David Phillips and Jeff Hubbard both took waves back to back, throwing synchronized moves; it’s like they were in each other’s heads. But the highflying Jacob Romero proved himself throughout the heat to be the best, by cruising with style and consistency. Romero scored the title for the Men’s Pro 2010 USBA Champion!

Following the Men’s finals was the Sling for Bling Tow Out event, showcasing Jorge Colomer, Drew Erickson, Hunter Fedden, Bud Miyamoto, Jason Bitzer, Jeff Hubbard and David Phillips. The waves were not frothing much, but it was a fun event for the contest goers to watch for sure.

The awards at The 2010 Sport Chalet US Open of Bodyboarding had an amazing show of support by the Huntington Beach Patrons. The USBA announced its tour Champions and we want to congratulate Jacob Romero- Men’s Pro Champ, Karla Costa Taylor- Women’s Pro Champ, Trevor Kam- Open Amateur Champ, JB Hillen- 13-18 Amateur Champ, and David Hubbard- Drop Knee Pro Champ.

Thanks to all our supporters of The 2010 Sport Chalet US Open of Bodyboarding- The Body Glove Tour, sponsored by Sport Chalet, Body Glove, Ocean Current, Churchill and Hawaiian Tropic.
