EVENT UPDATES: JENKS PRO MEN’S DIVISION GOES OFF-WAVES AND RIDERS!

To all media and riders:

Jeff Hubbard (Kauai, Hawaii/Current World Champ) swept the SCION Jenks Pro and the US National title for the second year in a row by narrowly beating Oahu, Hawaii’s JB Hillen. They two were followed up by Guilherme Tamega (Brazil/x6 World Champ) and Matt Holtzman (Kauai) who was competing in the Pro division as an Amateur. JB Hillen was the next best thing in the line up next to Jeff Hubbard with huge air roll spins and great barrels. Jeff’s wave knowledge and big moves edged him above the field however. Title contender Guilhereme Tamega had a good chance to take out Jeff but could not get the 8.86 score he needed to win the US title by placing second in the SCION Jenks Pro.

Jeff Hubbard is currently in the lead with 1720
Guilherme Tamega and Jacob Romero have both 1610
Spencer Skipper and Dave Hubbard both have both 1130

That means:
-If Guilherme or Jacob wins there is no chance for Jeff Hubbard to win the title
-if Jeff looses in the semi finals, TAMEGA or ROMERO need at least a 3rd
-if Jeff gets a 4th, GT or ROMERO need at least a 2nd
-if Jeff gets a 3rd, GT or ROMERO need to win
-if Jeff or GT go to semi there is no chance for SKIPPER

For the Women’s Pro,Karla Costa Taylor has secured her first event USBA National Title.

Trevor Kam has also secured his first ever Open Amateur National title.

The 13-18 Amateur divisions is being dominated by JB Hilen, however there is still room for Shabaz Soaia to over take him if JB goes down in the first round at Jenks.

Amazing things are in store for this year’s event. Some of the helpful features that have been added to help traveling pros include transportation for all riders, hospitality and VIP lounges and sports massage and chiropractic throughout the event. We’re thrilled to host the flagship event that started the entire USBA tour: The SCION Jenk’s Pro.

DAVE HUBBARD SWEEPS IT AND TAKES BOTH DIVISIONS AND KARLA COSTA TAYLOR SCORES A PERFECT 10 IN THE FINAL WITH A MASSIVE ARS AND TAKES IT HOME.

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, OAXACA – (August 4th, 2010) – The last day of competition was the most exciting day of all. The morning started with the DK semis with Dave Hubbard and Kim Feast, taking DUB the best out of it moving to the final. In semi 2 Micah McMullin faced current world champ Cesar Bauer. McMullin had a strong start, unfortunately his board delaminated and had to go in and get a different board. Meanwhile Bauer took advantage and score a couple of good rides taking the heat and moving to the DK final vs. Dave Hubbard.

Cesar Bauer

David Hubbard

The female semis were nothing but pure adrenaline. Eunate Aguirre was up against Maira Viana. Maira and her powerful style was taking off on the big ones trying to roll on the most critical sections, unfortunately did not landed her moves leaving the door open for Eunate who was patiently waiting for the perfect ones and finding a clean barrel to roll to take the heat. Then next semi was between Karla Costa and Ruth Parra from Venezuela. Parra was unable to find a good rhythm with the ocean and couldn’t get a good score. On the other hand Karla was hitting the lip with massive rollos and taking the heat with a comfortable lead.

David Hubbard launching high off the lip!

David Hubbard flying!

The prone division was next. Magno Oliveira vs. Dave Hubbard. Oliveira had been in fine form during the whole comp but didn’t find the rhythm to get the huge scores. Dave was patiently waiting for the rights and got a spin to barrel to ars combo taking the first spot in the final. Cesar Bauer vs. Hermano Castro was the 2nd semi. Bauer, also a DK finalist, had to be smart about using his energy and played safe waiting for the clean sets. A good right came his way and he busted a big invert. Hermano, waited and found the best waves of the whole heat, a sick left deep barrel coming out and hitting the last section with a roll to take the heat and move to the final.

Hermano Pereira

The first final of the day was the DK final. Cesar Bauer came in, switched boards and went back out to face the wonder kid Dave Hubbard. It was as intense as we all expected. Bauer started strong finding a great rhythm in the firsts 10 minutes of the heat but Hubbard answered back with a nine pointer with a snap to barrel to floater. Bauer immediately found a perfect right pulling in the tube and coming out of it, but was unable to finish his last move, a dk air reverse, getting an 8.5. It was really tight, but DUB took the win with a backside barrel to take hit first Puerto final.

Dubb Dking Zicatela

Karla Costa Taylor, all smiles!

The female final was next and all spectators could not get their eyes of the water. Every wave was so intense and cheered by the crowd as good as the world cup. Eunate Aguirre vs. Karla Costa Taylor. Eunate and her smooth riding style was leading the heat with a nice barrel to roll combo, but Karla answered back with a couple fo massive rollos. Costa started to gain confidence and in the last few minutes, she was able to launch a massive ARS and getting the highest scoring wave of the whole competition, a perfect 10, and taking the big bucks back home.

Karla Costa Taylor ripping it up.

The last and most exciting heat of the day was between Hermano Castro and Dave Hubbard. It was all about Dave since the beginning of the heat finding every wave and performing at his finest. With a couple of 9.6s’, a massive invert and an incredible barrel ride, Dave swept the Zicatela Pro winning both divisions, DK and Men’s Pro.

Congratulations to both Zicatela Pro 2010 Champions! Dave Hubbard and Karla Costa Taylor!!

DAY 3:

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE FROM MAGNO OLIVEIRA TAKING BOTH, THE HIGHEST WAVE SCORE 9.8 AND A TOTAL HEAT SCORE OF 19.20 POINTS.

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, OAXACA – (July 31st, 2010) – Zicatela Beach and all the spectators saw a lot of action from the men’s prone division. The second round was completed. All Mexican competitors advanced to the third round. Chuy Silva, Cesar Petroni, Gerardo Martinez, Jose Ramirez, Edwin Morales, Alexander Alvarez and Ulises Rodriguez.

The most exciting heat of the day had seeded number one Magno Oliveira, local Jesus Silva and Eduardo Carpinello from Chile. Magno took an early lead with a massive el Rollo and went back out straight into a perfect lefthander that would give him a 9.4 in the first five minutes. Illuminated by the gods, Magno was able to find a better score riding a double barrel wave ending with a smooth invert taking the highest score of the competition so far; a 9.8 and a total heat score of 19.20 to seal the deal. Local Jesus was in third place until the last few minutes where he found a little corner launching a clean ARS to take second place and move to the fourth round.

Waves are still picking up and it should be a great show for tomorrow morning. All round 3 will be running and all competitors are hungry for some big surf.

DAY 4:

SOLID LONG PERIOD SWELL (6-8 feet) ALLOWED ALL COMPETITORS A GREAT CHANCE TO SCORE EITHER A SICK BARREL OR A HUGE RAMP TO LAUNCH TO THE SKY.

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, OAXACA – (August 1st, 2010) – Nothing better than a long period swell for the best rounds of the contest. All third round was an amazing spectacle for everyone who witnessed the heats. Heavy barrels, epic ramps and beautiful weather.

The third round continued with Dave Hubbard and James Murdock advancing, leaving Spaniard Elosua in third. In heat 4 we saw a slow start but a strong finish from local kid Cesar Petroni taking the heat with a solid invert. Ardiel was able to find some corners and Giovanni Greco was unable to find a good score.

Cesar Petroni

Gregory Wonters and Cesar Bauer eliminated local big wave charger, Jose Ramirez in a tough heat. Jorge Colomer in heat 6, was feeling comfortable finding good barrels and air sections. In heat seven seeded #2 Hermano Pereira, was almost eliminated having a hard time finding the right wave. Barely made it in second moving to the next round with local Edwin Morales. Felipe Mendez and Jeremy Loebstock were the last to move into 4th round.

Forth round of action was the most anticipated moment of the day. With men on men heat format, the second heat had local Jesus Silva and argentine Emiliano Tabare. Conditions were changing and it was hard to find a good wave, but the local kid found a perfect and deep left barrel that would give him the victory to move into quarterfinals. Magno with a solid win over Puerto Rican Babby Quiñones will face local Jesus Silva in the most thrilling heat of the comp for all Mexican crowd!!

Stand by for more results.

James Murdock

______________________________________

Day 5:

ZICATELA PRO 2010 SAW THE MOST THRILLING DAY OF THE CONTEST. ALL QUARTERFINALS WERE AS HOT AS THE WEATHER AND WE HAVE THE SEMIFINALS READY TO GO. SF1 MAGNO OLIVEIRA VS DAVE HUBBARD AND SF2 CESAR BAUER VS HERMANO CASTRO.
PUERTO ESCONDIDO, OAXACA – (August 2nd, 2010) – Zicatela had hell of a show this morning with the end of the fourth round. The first heat of the day started with local Edwin Morales and Jeremy Loefstok. Conditions were tough, but Morales was able to find a couple of scores to take the heat. The last heat of round 4 was between Brazilians Hermano Castro and Felipe Mendez. Mendez started strong, but Castro waited for the bigger set and got the scores to take a spot in the quarterfinals.
QF1 had local talent Jesus Silva and the wave magnet, Magno “Magneto” Oliveira. Oliveira took an early lead finding the bigger waves and going for massive Rollos. Silva was not able to find a good score during the whole heat, giving Magno the first spot in the semis. In qf2, good friends Hubbard and Murdock were having a good time in the water. Hubbard found a great hollow left, were he busted a huge invert. Murdock had a couple of scores but nothing impressive for the judges. Hubbard sealed the deal with another big invert on a clean Puerto right to take the heat.
The second half of the round saw a soft onshore breeze, but the conditions were fully contestable. QF3 was between Aruba’s standout Gregory Wonters and Peruvian Cesar Bauer. It was an intense heat and Bauer was able to find the good scores to take a place in SF2. The last heat of the day had the last Mexican in the contest, Edwin Morales vs. Hermano Castro from Brazil. Morales took an early lead with a couple of Rollos, but Castro’s strategy came to play in the last 4 minutes of the heat, finding the best wave of the heat, an 8.5 barrel to invert, taking the last spot in the semis.
SF1 Magno “Magneto” Oliveira vs. Dave Hubbard SF2 Cesar Bauer vs. Hermano Castro.
DK and women’s QF and SF will run tomorrow, leaving the men’s semis and all finals for Wednesday with a decent south swell.

Australia’s hottest up and coming bodyboarder, Tom Rigby, re-signs with Mike Stewart Science.

Called the “Boy Wonder” by Movement magazine, and the dominant winner of the Riptide Readers “Best Grom”, Tom’s on a rapid ascent in the world of bodyboarding. “For his age he is perhaps the most sophisticated rider, [both on land and in the water] that I have known. Tom is already among the very elite in the sport of BodyBoarding and is surely destined for great things,” Said 9 time world champion Mike Stewart, from Science headquarters in Hawaii.

“I’ve been riding for Science for the past 3 years, and in that time, with strong support from Mike, Lisa and the whole Science team I’ve gained a lot of experience and knowledge which has been a big part of my development as a bodyboarder. Mike’s a great teacher and his technical knowledge, creativity and passion is really inspiring.

In saying this, I’m stoked to announce that I have signed for another 3 years with Science! I’m super amped for these next three years…working with Mike on new products and boards is exciting, and it’s great to be using the top bodyboard equipment in the world as I pursue the Australian and World tour, and try to keep pushing my riding to higher levels.” Said Tom Rigby from his home on the gold coast of Australia.

Tom on skype with Mike

Behind the scene we have been dialing in his new “RIG” board series. As both Tom’s stature and ability have grown, his custom board template has been modified to assist with Tom’s progression and help him take his riding to the next level. Keeping true to the principles of RTI (Real Time Innovation), the changes to Tom’s custom boards will be applied to Tom’s new “RIG” signature board line that will be available this spring. Besides Boards we are also collaborating on a number of other new projects that will be released in the months to come.

Science is owned and operated by Mike Stewart a 9 time world champion and current top 16 bodyboarder.

Where are you from: San Diego, California

Sponsors: Morey and Churchill

Years on the foam: 9 years

California can get some decent swells during winter. How was the last winter?

For California standards the waves were amazing. Every weekend we had overhead swell and offshore winds. My friend Tomic from the Goldy was staying with me during this time, and even though the waves were pumping California standards, he thought they were just average. But it was nice to get waves at least once a week, sometimes in Cali we can go a month without waves. Leif and Tom Wilson actually lucked into some waves at Seal Beach in Los Angeles that will be featured in the new flick Ring of Fire.

Where are the best breaks to surf?
In my opinion the best break in California is “Base” which is featured in the old No Friends vids. It reminds me of blackrock, but on sand. You can only surf it if you are either in the Military or have parents in the military. All the local boogs up there try to get a pass by getting jobs on the base. Nick Osky, who’s over in Aus right now staying with the Thurston’s worked as a baseball umpire for the summer to get the golden ticket. And Matty Meyer, one of the best riders in Cali has pretty much a lifetime pass from his family. It’s fun going up there to surf with those guys, always some friendly competition in the water.

The new American bodyboarding flick titled Ring of Fire looks incredible. Tell us a bit about that?

It’s a project that Rob Isambert has been working on now for a couple years. The sections include Cook Islands, Wedge, California, Bali, 2 Hawaii Seasons in one section, me/Charles Marabella split section, Matt Meyer, Pacific Northwest (wave in Le Boogie 3), Mike Lepiere, Puerto, and ending it with John Porzucezek. There is a lot of variety. Can’t wait for the premiere, we haven’t had anticipation for a premiere in California like this since the old No Friends vids. All these guys will all be coming out to Aus in June to film the next video.
Plenty of the best young Australian bodyboarders have flown to Los Angeles to party with you. Do you have any cool stories about the mischief you guys have got up to?

Some of the guys that have stayed in LA with me are now married or have girlfriends so the funniest stories are going to have to remain silent. Small things that have happened over the past 5 years are:

Sorority parties in Arizona (Number 1 party school rated by playboy)

Halloween at Santa Barbara

Limo’s to the best Hollywood clubs

Floatopia Spring Break

Coachella and the open bar after parties

Held up at gunpoint in Vegas

$200,000 birthday party in Vegas

Rob & Big’s House Party

Sneaking into the Academy Awards

There is nothing better than going to college in the US. We only have to be in class about 15 hours a week and they don’t take attendance. There are parties 4 times a week, and in LA my friend runs a limo service and promotes the best clubs in Hollywood. These nights are always fun, however the unexpected nights are always that much better.

Last October, the night of the Emmy’s Award Show, me, Harry Dixon, and Sam Gray went out to Hollywood to try to find a couple after parties. It seemed impossible to get anywhere since all the streets were closed down and security was everywhere.

Instead of leaving, we decided to sneak in. The valets working the event were young, so we walked past them and jumped a fence that was outside of the nightclub. In order to sneak in we had to jump three fences, 1 being about 20 feet high, hide underneath an RV, and not get caught by security. Once we finally made it in, we were backstage while MGMT was playing live. The security then spotted us, however they thought we were the next band playing.

Everyone at the event was either a celebrity or an agent and they were all wearing Versace and Gucci suits. We walked up to the bar, wearing regular clothes, and asked, “How much for a jack and coke?” The bar tender responded, “everything is free sir, there is an open sushi bar on the second floor, and another restaurant on the third floor.”

Harry was hanging with Jon Voight (dad of Angelina Jolie) the whole night, Sam was backstage w/ MGMT getting their leftover groupies and I was with off getting sushi with the guys from Entourage and their girlfriends.

The night ended with all of us walking down the red carpet blacked out drunk and waking up in random hotel rooms. The next day I couldn’t find Sam or Harry until around 5 pm.
